Confessions Of A Caffeine Addict

I’ll admit it, I’m a caffeine addict.

I’m not firing on all cylinders until I’ve had my coffee fix.

And it is about 10:00 in the morning.

I have an amazing wife and an awesome 2-year old.

I try to spend as much time with them as humanly possible.

So I’m pretty much always sleep-deprived.

Throw in my reading, and writing obsessions and it’s easy to see why my addiction grows.

I’m sure I’ve unintentionally been rude to those I see everyday because I needed a shot of caffeine.

Please forgive me.

I will try my best to do better.

I know I’m not alone.

Does anyone else want to admit that they too are a caffeine addict?  Have you quit drinking coffee altogether? Please share your thoughts in the comments. Thanks!

I joke that on the 8th day God made coffee. The 9th chocolate. Coffee is the nectar of the gods, and it’s not just the caffeine, although that is probably the most important, for me it’s the entire experience. Brewing it, smelling it, pouring the first cup, and savoring the first sip. Ahhhhh, how I love coffee!

  • Michael Carter

Guilty. I fasted from coffee a few years ago. I thought I would die.

Haha, I understand. I totally understand!!

    Guilty!

Thanks for admitting it. Good to know I’m not alone! :)

Triple shots of espresso in morning and eve!  Writing til 5am.  Up at 8 with the kids. I usually last about 3 days before finally collapsing for a 9 hour sleep night.  Love it though!  Living my passions!  Caffeine certainly helps!

    • http://unknownjim.com/ Jim Woods

Wow. Triple shots of espresso. You don’t mess around!!!!! You gotta live your passions. That’s awesome Ryan!! Otherwise, you aren’t really living are ya?!!

Coffee makes me wilder! I bought one of those Keurig coffee makers, now I can get my fix in less than a minute.

    • http://unknownjim.com/ Jim Woods

Hahaha. I might have worn out two of those. REMEMBER TO DESCALE IT WITH VINEGAR (yes I was screaming a little..in a nice way) The needle clogs and the device becomes useless. Just FYI :)

    Mmm…coffee…
Yeah, I like to have it to get me going as well.  Heading to work at 2:30 in the morning, then later working on my blog, music etc.
I once went without it for a month, because I was battling an arthritis thing.  It was great coming back!

    I’m not a coffee addict.

I just can’t function without it.

    Oh… *moment of realization*

    • unknownjim

      Haha love that Andrew!

I said I wouldn’t do this, but I’ve become not only a coffee addict, but I’m a coffee snob as well. Grind my own beans…can’t bear Folgers, Maxwell House, or most gas station brews.

But I’m also a cheapskate. I won’t drink a $2.50 cup of Statbucks (very often).

My first student film was called Java: One Mans Addiction. I wasn’t even a coffee drinker then. Art imitates life, I guess.

    • http://unknownjim.com/ Jim Woods

Wow JT, that is pretty funny. I think NONE of us plan on becoming a “coffee snob,” but it kind of just happens to us. That movie actually sounds pretty entertaining and I’d probably watch it while drinking coffee.

    • http://rebootingworship.com/ Jamie Kocur

I’m right there with you. I’m a total coffee snob. It started for me when I worked at a coffee shop and learned what good coffee really was. There’s no turning back.

  • http://www.stringsforhope.com/ Laura

The first cup I remember, I was 5 y/o and my grandmother made me one that was probably more sugar and milk than coffee. I never looked back after that.  Today I like it straight out of the pot – hot, black, and strong.  The timer goes off at 4:20 so it’s there when my feet hit the floor at 4:30.

For those of you who shop Woot.com, I stole this tag line from them: Coffee – not just for social deviants

    • http://unknownjim.com/ Jim Woods

      4:30. Impressive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Pilar Arsenec

    Yes. I need my coffee!!

  • Allysahn

I did not become a coffee drinker by choice, more from social interaction with my significant other. Even today, if my husband doesn’t fix a pot of java, I may or may not make one. Since he gets up before me, there’s almost always three or four cups left for me to drink. Then I switch to diet soda for the afternoon. I know, the ds are terrible for you, but it’s my last bastion of bad habits. Please, please, let me keep ‘em.

    • http://unknownjim.com/ Jim Woods

Thanks for sharing Ally! You KNOW you are bad when you drink coffee ALL DAY LONG. (Not that I would know about that. Haha)

  • http://www.eileenknowles.com/ Eileen

I like to think of myself as a coffee connoisseur.   I actually switch to decaf in the afternoon.  If not, I am up ALL NIGHT.

    • http://unknownjim.com/ Jim Woods

Eileen, actually I think the term is “coffee snob” which use to be a bad term but now its completely acceptable. I am a proud member of this club by default-my wife is part of a family “coffee cartel” that imports beans and roasts them. If it sounds kind of shady, I think it’s because it is. Haha :)

  • http://chrystalmurphy.com/ Chrystal

Caffeine – yes. Coffee – no. Yuck. My beverage of choice is Mt. Dew. In fact, I REALLY wish I had some Mt. Dew right now but I do not and thinking about it makes me want to jump in the car and drive to the nearest gas station…gotta go. :)

    • http://unknownjim.com/ Jim Woods

      HAHAHAH.

  • http://rebootingworship.com/ Jamie Kocur

I am a definite caffeine addict. In fact, I read this post about 10 minutes ago, but had to go get my coffee before I could adequately respond.

I tried to give it up at the start of this year, because I was tired of feeling tired all the time. I tried it for two months (I heard that it’s best to try it for at least six weeks) but honestly, I found that I didn’t feel much better. I was still tired all the time, but I didn’t have my morning cup of coffee to look forward to, so I was tired and unhappy. So I gave up giving up caffeine.

I do only have one cup in the morning and that’s it. I can’t have any past 3:00 p.m. or I will be hating life come bedtime.

    • http://unknownjim.com/ Jim Woods

Totally understand Jamie. Good to know I’m not alone! :) haha. I don’t want to admit how much coffee I drink right now. It’s kind of scary..haha

  • http://twitter.com/croyseniles Christine Niles

Hi, I’m Christine, and I’m a coffee addict.

I am ever-so-thankful for the timer on my coffee pot that has a fresh hot carafe waiting for me at 5:00 AM…i’m a disaster without it.  I do try to stop at two big cups or three small cups and switch over to water.  As I get, ahem, older, I find that caffeine late in the day impairs my sleep.  My husband, however, can down a 20oz Mountain Dew right before bed and still be fine.  Weird, eh?

    • http://unknownjim.com/ Jim Woods

I WISH I had a coffee pot timer. That’s slick! I think your husband is definitely in the minority there! That’s just crazy talk!! :) Haha

      • http://twitter.com/croyseniles Christine Niles

The timer is the critical success factor in my dreamchasing.  No coffee, no wakey.  No wakey, no words.  No words, no dreams.  therefore…no coffee, no dreams.  I like logic.  :-)

        • http://unknownjim.com/ Jim Woods

Hahaha well said. You should make that a post!!

          • http://twitter.com/croyseniles Christine Niles

that’s about the extent of my literary prowess this week!

      • KWoodsMK

you DO have a coffee pot timer…we’ve just never set the clock on the coffee pot & therefore never use the timer! :)

        • http://twitter.com/croyseniles Christine Niles

BAM!  The truth comes out!  :-)

          • http://unknownjim.com/ Jim Woods

They say the truth will set you free…but this just was not cool. Hahaha. Who else get’s called out on their blog by their spouse? JUST ME.

        • http://unknownjim.com/ Jim Woods

Ummm..really? Doht! Opps! I learn something new EVERY day. Hahaha.

        • http://www.stringsforhope.com/ Stringsforhope

I loved you before but now I LOVE you!  Jim – it’s that’s blinky 12:00 you see. Muahahaaaaaaaaaa

    • Allysahn

My husband can do that, too! What’s really infuriating is he can sit down at almost anytime of the day and take a power nap, and still go to sleep at bedtime. As an insomniac my whole life(until I found Melatonin 15 yrs ago), his behaviour made me go, “Awrrggg.”

      • http://twitter.com/croyseniles Christine Niles

Jealous of the ability to nap at will…that’s another that i have a hard time with.  If i nap anytime after 4, there’s no sleeping for me that night.

  • http://www.facebook.com/yvette.carol Yvette Carol

Hi Jim! When I was in the hospitality industry I was fully, deeply into my caffeine addiction. We had a coffee pot for staff out the back and I simply kept my cup topped up all day long. Gee, I must have tried to quit about three times but if the headaches hadn’t killed me my friends would have done, because it made me such a grump! You know how I did eventually quit? And I didn’t set out to that time, which is the kicker. I had actually accepted my love of the java and decided to live with it. But then I fell pregnant with my third child. When I went into the birthing centre the night he was born I was a confirmed coffee drinker. 1.15 my born entered the world. The next morning I asked the nurse for a cup of tea! Don’t ask me why. I’ve drunk tea ever since that day!!! :-)

    • http://unknownjim.com/ Jim Woods

Wow Yvette, that’s awesome. Love that little story. Isn’t tea the “sophisticated” drink compared to coffee? (At least in some circles, right?)

      • Yvette Carol

Well I don’t know if it’s sophisticated, in my circles it’s ‘common’ because we all drink it. What’s it been? Well nearly 7 years now, my boy turns 7 next month so yeah. BTW; my computer is playing up so I didn’t see your reply until I came online and clicked your ‘previous’ button. My laptop may be dying I think so I keep falling one step behind everyone else…
